High Chancellor Adam Sutler

High Chancellor Adam Sutler is the film version of Adam James Susan in the 2006 film adaptation, and is portrayed by John Hurt, ruling as the absolute dictator of the United Kingdom and head of the Norsefire Party.

Sutler was "a young and upcoming politician" and "a deeply religious man and a member of the Conservative party". After the founding of Norsefire, over 100,000 people were killed with a virus created by Norsefire at the Larkhill Detention Center. He then uses the supposed terrorist threat as a pretext for genocide, along with an ongoing propaganda campaign in the state-run media, to cow the public into silence and appoint himself High Chancellor, turning the country into a single-party state with himself as an autocrat.

For most of the film he is only seen on television, until the end when he finally appears in person moments before his death. When Sutler discovers he is being lampooned in a farce on a talk show, he is enraged and orders the show's host, Gordy Deitrich, arrested in the dead of night and executed.

Sutler himself would eventually be captured and executed by Peter Creedy, the head of the party's Finger secret police division, who was resentful that Sutler blamed him for failing to capture V and had threatened to fire Creedy from his position if the Palace of Westminster was destroyed.

After his death, Creedy would also be murdered by V along with his men.

Trivia[]

  • Sutler is the secondary with Mosley and Adolf Hilter, having a similar hairstyle, figure, moustache and style of military dress Mosley wore (the "Undercut"). However, Sutler is described as Labour. Adam Susan in comparison, however, is extremely different and shares more similarities with Benito Mussolini.
